14 Benefits Every Digital Nomad Enjoys
Being a digital nomad has plenty of perks. Here are the top benefits of being a digital nomad, plus why they matter.
Being a digital nomad sounds amazing — and it is. You get to travel the world while making money, and you ultimately decide where you want to go and when.
Of course, there’s a little more to it than that. If you’re interested in the digital nomad lifestyle, it’s only natural to wonder why it’s so popular. Consider these benefits of being a digital nomad to see if it’s right for you.
DIY work environment
Working in an office can be so…soul-sucking. But digital nomads have the freedom to work from anywhere. Want to get your work done on the beach? No problem! Like to get your job done in cafes around the world? Done! As long as you have a wifi connection, you’re good to go.
No commute
With no office to work from, you don’t have to travel anywhere to get your work done. That saves you time and money, and ultimately can help you have a shorter workday.
You make your schedule
Unless your job requires you to be available during certain hours, you can pick and choose when you work. If you’d rather leave your mornings open for exploring your area, you can do that. Want to take a time-out to hit up a local event in the middle of the day? There’s zero reason why you can’t.
Less daily stress
Being on someone else’s schedule can be stressful. There’s the hassle of rushing to work, needing to get to meetings on time, and having to be in a set location during hours that might not work for you. But, as a digital nomad, you don’t have to worry about any of that — and it ultimately means you’ll be less stressed at the end of the day.
You can make money while living in a cheap location
You choose where you want to go but some places, like Southeast Asia, are known for having a cheap cost of living. If you’re working with clients in wealthier countries, you could be earning a lot while paying relatively little for housing, food, and transportation.
Work as much (or as little) as you like
If you’re a freelance nomad or own your own business, you can choose to work as often as you like. That allows you to figure out your financial sweet spot so you can earn the amount you want, while having the right time off that makes sense for you. Also, if you want to take some time off, no one is going to tell you that you can’t.
You become part of a new community
Digital nomads make up a thriving global community. With that, there are plenty of opportunities to join forces with other nomads — in person and online — to swap knowledge and travel stories, or just to make new friends. You can join our thriving NomadX global lifestyle community for digital nomads Facebook group.
You can wear what you want
Whether you’re a jeans and T-shirt kind of person or prefer to work in your PJs, you wear whatever when you’re a digital nomad.
You set your own path
It’s up to you to decide where you want to go and when. If you prefer to live in a warm climate 24/7, that’s no problem — just travel to the right spots. Ditto if you’re more of a cold weather person.
You’ll develop better language skills
Sure, you can learn a new language in school or take an online course, but there’s no better way to hone your language skills than actually being around people who speak it.
You pick your days off
Prefer to work on weekends and have select weekdays off? Or maybe you’re more of a four-day workweek kind of person. Either way, it’s not an issue.
Unlimited travel
Seriously. You can be a digital nomad for as long as you want, including forever. There’s no limit on where you can travel.
You learn to live with less material stuff
Being a digital nomad means hauling your possessions around the world with you, and you quickly learn what you can and can’t do without. The stuff you don’t need won’t make the cut for long.
You’re part of a next-gen movement
Digital nomads are part of a growing community and movement. A 2018 study by research firm MBO Partners found that 4.8 million U.S. citizens identified as digital nomads, and there are many more around the globe doing the same thing. With more companies allowing for greater workplace flexibility, the digital nomad movement is only expected to grow.
